The B'nei Mitzvah Program at Temple Oheb Shalom creates a wonderful and meaningful experience for the student and his or her family.
The program begins in fourth grade religious school and continues through the 7th grade year culminating in a Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony celebrated at a congregational worship service.
One of the exciting features of our program is flexibility. The child's Bar or Bat Mitzvah date is assigned based upon the choices provided by the family. It is possible to celebrate becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah on Shabbat morning at our 10:00AM service, Shabbat afternoon at our 5:00PM service that concludes with Havdalah, or during a Monday or Thursday 7:30 morning service. The service can usually be held in either the Greenebaum Sanctuary or the Gordon Chapel. We will do everything within our power to ensure that every child has his/her own Bar/Bat Mitzvah service.
The preparation program has four elements: Classroom time with Cantor Braun during the 6th grade year learning Torah Cantillation; private instructional time with one of our highly skilled staff teachers; one-on-one sessions with both Rabbi Fink and Cantor Braun for several months prior to the B'nai Mitzvah event and a comprehensive Mitzvah Program where students are encouraged to turn their learning into action.
Each and every B'nei Mitzvah student here at Temple Oheb Shalom is treated indiviually according to his or her own Hebrew levels, with great regard and respect. Bar and Bat Mitzvah is one of the many times when our clergy and staff connects with members in emotional and spiritual ways, creating memories that last a lifetime.
